Royal Gorge
The Royal Gorge formed over the river of Arkansas and started on its way to its final shape 3 million years ago. At that time, the Arkansas Rivers (currently the sixth longest in the United States) was only a wee rivulet. However, it cut through the solid granite rock over the eons and created the deep gorge we now know as Royal Gorge.
Aptly named "The Grand Canyon of Arkansas", Royal Gorge is 10 miles long and is 1250 feet at its deepest point.
In the late 1870s, Royal Gorge was a key access point for the Silver and lead deposits near Canon City. Due to its narrowness, only one Railroad company could control it leading to a semi conflict called "The Royal Gorge Railroad War" which was put an end to by "The Treaty of Boston" brokered by the Federal government.
For the interest of tourists, the Royal Gorge Route Railroad now runs through the Gorge. This railroad is all that's left of the famous railroad wars. Interestingly, one portion of the canyon is merely 30 ft across where there is no space for both the river and the tracks. Therefore, the bridge is suspended above the narrow strip of water.
This was accomplished in 1879 and has been in operation for 118 years.
Royal Gorge Bridge
The Royal Gorge bridge is right in the center of the "Royal Gorge Theme Park" which is spread out of 360 acres. It is the longest suspension bridge over water in the world hanging 1053 ft over the Arkansas River.
An unfortunate (though interesting) consequence of this statistic is that the site is a favorite suicide point (presumably due to assured death) and due to this it is constantly patrolled by security guards on the lookout for such attempts.
The bridge was an amazing engineering feat that was completed way back in 1929. The estimated cost was $350,000 which would now be around $20 million!
