Make this the Year of the Hike in Colorado

Bear Peak Trail ColoradoEven if you’re not a skier, there is still plenty to do in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. When you visit a place as beautiful as the Breckenridge area of Colorado, you know it calls for a change from routine.  Rather than spending another Colorado vacation doing nothing but shopping, dining and sightseeing, why not  make this the “year of the hike”?

Vacationing in Colorado is such a treat during the summer. The Rocky Mountains are in full bloom and weather is amazing.  If you plan to spend time near Boulder this summer, there is no better spot to absorb nature’s splendor than on Bear Peak Trail.

Located in the foothills of Colorado’s Rocky Mountains, Bear Peak is a very recognizable landmark from afar.  It offers excellent hiking trails and superb views of the Great Plains, Boulder and even Denver on a clear day.  Two major trailheads provide access to Bear Peak Trail, one on the Northeast and one in the Southeast side of the mountain.  From either of these trailheads, hikers can follow various paths to get to the summit.

Photographers and sightseers alike will be sure to look for Devil’s Thumb on the Bear Peak massif.  It is a rock pillar which is visible from many spots in Boulder and it can be accessed from Shadow Canyon trail.  A commonly known “phallic” landmark, Devil’s Thumb is a popular climbing location and is often called the “Boulder Boner” by locals.

No permits are required, and parking is free, but beware; as the name suggests, there is a possibility of seeing black bears in the area.  When they are seen, rangers will post clear warnings and make certain trails off-limits.  Hiking on Bear Peak can be done any time of the year, but autumn is usually the best because it is not as hot and the trails are drier.

Make this the summer you get up close and personal with nature in Colorado’s Bear Peak Trail. And of course, if you are looking for the perfect weekend vacation getaway cabin in Colorado, then you're in the right place.

The hiking opportunities in the Vail Valley are great as well. You can hike from Vail to Aspen over the flat tops if you want to! When I'm in the Vail area I stay at the East West Resort in Beaver Creek or Bachelor Gulch.

The hot tub at night under the Colorado stars with the wind blowing through the trees was incredible! Everybody was comfy and Barkley & Jersey-Girl (our dogs) absolutely loved the wide open spaces.  What a wonderful vacation!
